Everyone will need a desk at some time in their life, and will probably need to buy more than one in their lifetime. Here are some helpful tips for buying desks.
The things you need to consider when getting a new desk include the intended use of the proposed desk, the size of the desk you need, the size and shape of the room you will put the desk, what the desk should be made of, the height of the desk and what storage you require to be part of the desk. Will you be able to buy a ready-made desk or will you need one to be custom-built?
Think about how much space you will need to be able to perform the tasks you will generally be using the desk for. Then measure up the space in the room where the desk will be located, so you know the maximum size of the desk you can fit there. Think outside the square when considering placement of the desk in the room; you might want to consider a corner desk to save space in the room and still get extra desk space for your work.
Decide what you want to use the desk for. It could be to house a computer, to use for study, to work on your hobbies or crafts, for art or drawing or as a general purpose area for paperwork and paying bills. The purpose of the desk will determine the size, shape and height you will need.
Look at the décor of the room where the desk will be kept, and consider how well the desk needs to go with the other fittings there. If the desk is to be in a formal room, you might want to look at some of the beautiful reproduction models made out of timber with leather inserts, so that the over-all effect of the room isn’t lost, with a desk that clashes with the décor. If the desk is for a child’s room or a family area, it can be more modern in styling.
Desks can be made of timber, metal, plastic or any combination of these. Consider which material will be the most serviceable for the use of the desk, and which will coordinate with the room the best. You could buy an unfinished timber desk and paint or decorate it to match the room. The height of the desk is another consideration; will you be standing at the desk or sitting. If you are sitting, what height of chair will you need?
Think about the storage component of the desk. Consider if you need drawers or shelves to store things needed for the use of the desk. You might want to consider book shelves at the back of the desk to store supplies, or a drawer or shelf underneath could be sufficient. It is best to have all the supplies you need stored within easy reach, when working at a desk.
When you have compiled your list of requirements, it is time to start to shop. Visit furniture stores, antique shops, markets and online sites to research the range of desks that are available. If you cannot find exactly what you want, find a cabinetmaker who could custom design and make the desk for you.
