
USB Extension devices allow extension of USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices beyond the 5 meter USB connection limit. With the help of these devices, the extension can range from 100 meters up to 10 km, depending upon the channel which is used for connection. Extenders can be connected using Cat5e cables, using wireless technology or over fiber. The latter uses fiber optic cables for transmission of signals whereas wireless technology works using radio transmission. Most common amongst the types of Extension devices, the Cat5 extender consists of a local transmitter and receiver unit that is connected via UTP/STP cable.
